Maureen McManus who heads the Crew Department has over 25 years of experience in the Industry, having studied Hotel Management and Catering, she started out her yachting career as a Stewardess and as a Chef on some of the industry's elite Private and Charter Yachts. Now after 18 years working shore based as a Charter Broker, Yacht and Crew Agent her wealth and variety of experience provides her with a huge arsenal of knowledge to draw from when assisting in your Crew Selection and Placement. You can always rely on her passion, professionalism and discretion and above all a personal and dedicated service. Her knowledge of the yachting industry as crew, charter broker and crew agent provides a unique insight allowing her to truly match the right candidate to your exact requirements.
A career in yachting can be very rewarding, it is exciting and a wonderful opportunity to travel the world. It does require an initial financial outlay for the first few basic but essential qualifications STCW95 and ENG1 (medical certificate). There are many other certificates and qualifications that you can achieve as you grow within the industry that are offered by the RYA and the MCA (a list of approved schools can be found on the many yachting websites). Make sure that yachting is for you before you spend a small fortune on getting over qualified for your first position, experience and the right personality will always win over an added empty ticket. Yachting, although can offer the most amazing and life changing opportunities, ultimately it does demand hard work, long hours, perfection and attention to detail. It is not for everyone. Please do try to do your research before making that final decision. If you are looking for your first yachting job, traditionally the crewing season for the Mediterranean is around March/April. This is when hundreds of hopeful candidates arrive in Antibes and Palma. If you are planning to move to one of the Yachting Hubs be aware that accommodation is not cheap and the least expensive and better quality crew houses will quickly get booked up in advance. Also for all non EU passport holders please do check that you know and understand the legal Visa requirements to work on a yacht before you spend money on expensive courses and flight tickets.
There are quite a few social media sites especially on Facebook that are available with lots of very useful information on the main areas of yachting… Antibes, Palma, Italian sites.
Do not always trust advice given by non-professionals, especially the legal requirements when it comes to required Certifications and Visa requirements.
Having said all of this Yachting is an Industry that when it works for you can be the most rewarding of careers, the most memorable, you will make lifelong friends, perhaps meet your life partner, achieve your goals, visit the world’s most beautiful and breath taking scenery and sites. The world really could be your oyster.
